Search Console for online stores

Stores have many similar URLs that change often. These are the Search Console checks that catch the usual problems, and how to ask for them in plain language.

Problems stores run into

Product and category pages are many, similar and short-lived. Filter and sort parameters create near-duplicate URLs, and Google may choose a different canonical than the one you set. New products can stay discovered or crawled but not indexed for weeks. Seasonal ranges lose clicks every year, which makes it hard to tell a real drop from the calendar. Product rich results can disappear after a theme or plugin update, and the first sign is fewer clicks.

Find product pages Google has not indexed

insights_index_audit inspects the URLs in a sitemap, a sitemap index or a list you give it, and reports which ones Google has not indexed. Each URL uses one inspection from the property's URL Inspection quota of 2,000 per day, so a large catalog is audited in pages over several days; see URL Inspection quota. Start with the sitemap that holds new products or best sellers, where a missing page costs the most. The index coverage audit and bulk URL inspection pages explain how to read the results.

Ask your assistant

Audit the product sitemap of my store and list the URLs Google has not indexed.

Check canonicals and rich results

gsc_inspect_url returns Google's index status, last crawl, the canonical Google selected and rich results for a single URL. Use it when a filtered or variant URL ranks instead of the product page, or when Google picks a different canonical URL than yours. gsc_search_analytics can group clicks and impressions by search appearance, which shows how much traffic comes from results with rich results.

Ask your assistant

Inspect this product URL and tell me which canonical Google chose, when it was last crawled and whether any rich results were detected.

Separate seasonality from real losses

insights_compare_periods compares any two date ranges, so you can put this November against last November instead of against October. insights_content_decay lists the pages that lost the most clicks over recent days. When a category page and a product page show up for the same query, insights_cannibalization finds queries where two or more of your pages each take at least 10% of impressions; see keyword cannibalization.

Sitemaps and the other engines

gsc_list_sitemaps shows each submitted sitemap with submitted and indexed counts, errors and warnings. The sitemap health check covers Google, Bing and Yandex together. With Bing connected, bing_crawl_issues lists URLs Bingbot had trouble crawling, with the HTTP code. When products are added or changed, indexnow_submit tells Bing, Yandex and the other IndexNow engines in one call; Google does not take part.
