Discovered and crawled, currently not indexed

Two Search Console statuses that look alike and mean different things: what each one says about a page, and what to check next.

Two statuses, not one

Search Console's page indexing report lists both under the reasons pages are not indexed. They mark different stages:

  • Discovered – currently not indexed: Google knows the URL, from a link or a sitemap, but has not crawled it yet. Often Google postponed the crawl, for example because crawling more would have overloaded the site. There is no last crawl date.
  • Crawled – currently not indexed: Google fetched the page and decided not to index it for now. It may be indexed later, and resubmitting it does not change that by itself.

Common causes

Discovered usually points to crawling: many new URLs at once, a slow server, or pages with few internal links. On large sites this is where crawl budget shows. Crawled usually points to the page itself: thin content, a near duplicate of another page, or content Google does not yet see as worth showing. Some pages in either state are normal, and new pages often just need time.

What to do

Start with the pages that matter. Link to them from strong pages, keep them in the sitemap, and make sure each has a clear canonical URL and content that differs from similar pages. Then ask Google to crawl them.

insights_index_audit inspects the URLs in a sitemap and reports which ones Google has not indexed; gsc_inspect_url gives the index status and last crawl for one URL. Both use the URL Inspection quota of 2,000 per property per day. See the index coverage audit.
