The symptom
You asked for an index check on many URLs, and the answer stops partway or says the quota is used up. Single inspections that worked earlier in the day now fail too. Everything else, such as clicks, impressions and sitemaps, still works.
The cause
Google gives each Search Console property a quota of 2,000 URL inspections per day. Both gsc_inspect_url and insights_index_audit draw from it, because both ask Google's URL Inspection API for the answer. Every URL inspected counts once, however you got there. mowteng cannot raise the limit, and the quota belongs to the property, so several assistants or several people working on the same property share the same 2,000.
How long audits work within it
insights_index_audit inspects many URLs from a sitemap, a sitemap index or a list you give it. It pages through the work with an offset, so a big site is checked in chunks instead of in one request. Each chunk uses part of the day's quota. If your site has more than 2,000 URLs, the audit simply takes more than one day.
- Run the audit on your most important URLs first: the pages that earn clicks and the ones you recently published.
- Note the offset where it stopped, or ask your assistant to remember how far it got.
- Continue the next day from the same offset.
Audit https://example.com/sitemap.xml for pages Google has not indexed, check the first 500 URLs, and tell me which offset to continue from.
Spend the quota well
- Inspect a sample, not every URL, when you only want a feel for the pattern. If one section of the site is not indexed, you will see it in a few hundred URLs.
- Skip pages you know are blocked on purpose, such as noindex pages.
- Use the free report first. Search Console's own page indexing report lists non-indexed pages in groups, without using the inspection quota.
- Keep some quota in reserve for the URLs you publish tomorrow.
Wait for the reset
The limit is daily, so it resets and you can continue. Inspections you already made are not lost. For a deeper look at what the audit reports, read auditing which pages are not indexed and bulk URL inspection. Checking whether a single URL was picked up is covered in asking Google, Bing and Yandex to crawl a page.
