How to add a site to Google Search Console

Add a property, verify that you own the site, and confirm your access. About ten minutes, plus waiting for data.

Domain or URL prefix?

Search Console offers two property types. A domain property covers every protocol and subdomain of a domain (http, https, www and others) in one report. You verify it with a DNS record. A URL-prefix property covers only the exact address you type, such as https://www.example.com/, and can be verified in several ways. If you can edit your DNS, the domain property is the simpler choice because one property sees everything. See Search Console property for the difference in detail.

Add and verify by hand

  1. Open Google Search Console and sign in with the Google account you want to own the site.
  2. Open the property picker and choose to add a property.
  3. Pick Domain and enter example.com, or pick URL prefix and enter the full address including https://.
  4. Verify ownership. For a domain property, Search Console shows a TXT record to add at your DNS provider. For a URL prefix, you can upload an HTML file, add a meta tag to the home page, or use an existing Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager setup.
  5. Save the DNS change or publish the file or tag, then press Verify. DNS changes can take a while to spread, so if verification fails, wait and try again.

Keep the verification record or file in place. If you remove it, Search Console can drop your ownership later.

Add the property from your assistant

mowteng can create the property for you with the gsc_add_site tool. Your assistant treats it as a write action and should ask before running it. It only adds the property: ownership must still be verified in Search Console before any data appears, because Google decides who owns a site, not mowteng.

Ask your assistant

Add https://example.com/ to my Search Console properties, then list my properties and show my permission level on each.

The gsc_list_sites tool returns every property your Google account can access and your permission level on each. If the new property has no data yet, finish the verification step above.

When data starts to appear

A new property starts empty. Search Console only reports from the moment the property exists in your account, and the first rows usually take a day or two to show. After that, ask for clicks and impressions with gsc_performance_overview, or run one of the ready-made analyses.
