The symptom
You open ChatGPT's apps or plugins page to add mowteng, and there is no way to add your own server. You only see the apps that ChatGPT lists itself, and nothing offers a custom MCP server or a field for a URL.
The cause: developer mode is off
ChatGPT shows the custom MCP server option only when developer mode is enabled. It is off by default, so a normal account has no entry point to paste a URL. This has nothing to do with mowteng or your Google account.
Fix it
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings.
- Turn on developer mode.
- Open
chatgpt.com/plugins, choose + and then Add custom MCP server. - Paste the mowteng address and confirm:
https://mowteng.app/mcp - Sign in with Google when asked, and leave the Search Console permission ticked.
Menu names can change as ChatGPT updates. If you do not see these exact words, look for developer mode in the advanced settings of the apps or connectors section.
If the option is still missing
Whether custom MCP servers are available can depend on your ChatGPT plan, and on your workspace settings if the account belongs to a team or company. That is controlled by ChatGPT, not by mowteng, and its own help pages say what your plan allows. A workspace admin may be able to switch it on. While you wait, mowteng works the same way in other assistants with one URL: Claude and Cursor, for example. You can compare the options in the integrations list.
After it is added
Test it with a question that makes the assistant call a tool:
List my Search Console properties, then show which pages on the busiest one lost the most clicks in the last 28 days.
If ChatGPT shows the connector but the answers are empty or an error appears, the problem is no longer the missing option: use MCP server not connecting or no properties showing. The full setup for ChatGPT is on Search Console in ChatGPT.
