Search Console's built-in AI vs an MCP server

Google added a natural-language box to Search Console. It is useful, but it does a different job from an assistant connected through MCP.

What Google's feature does

In December 2025 Google announced AI-powered configuration for Search Console. You type a request such as "clicks from mobile in France last quarter", and it sets the filters, comparison and metrics of the Performance report for you. You confirm, and the report updates.

Its help page lists the limits: it works in the Search results Performance report only (not Discover or News), it does not sort or page the table, apply thresholds, export data or add annotations, and each user can make 20 requests a day. It is experimental and shown to a small share of Search Console users. It sets up the report; reading it is still up to you.

What an MCP server does

An MCP server gives the AI assistant you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT, tools that call Search Console for you. The assistant fetches the rows, compares periods, groups and explains them, and can take the next step. mowteng's tools cover Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Yandex Webmaster and IndexNow.

When the built-in feature is enough

  • You are already in Search Console and want a filter set faster than by clicking.
  • You only need Google, and you will read the chart yourself.
  • You do not want to connect any third-party tool to your account.

When an assistant with MCP is the better fit

  • You want an answer, not a filtered table: what changed, why it matters and what to do.
  • You want to compare periods or engines, or check index status across a sitemap.
  • You want a weekly check that runs on its own, or to submit a sitemap in the same conversation.
Ask your assistant

Compare the last 28 days with the 28 before: which pages lost the most clicks, and which queries did they lose?
