How they relate
An MCP server is not a rival to the Search Console API. It is a layer on top of it. When you ask your assistant a question, it calls a tool, the tool calls the API with your permission, and the assistant explains what came back. mowteng works this way: it fetches search data live for each request and does not store it. The real choice is between writing your own program against the API and asking questions in plain language.
Side by side
| Writing against the API | An MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | Code, a Google Cloud project, credentials and a place to run it | An assistant and, with mowteng, a Google sign-in |
| Time to first answer | Hours to days for a new script | Minutes |
| Questions | Only the ones you coded | Anything you can phrase, plus ready-made analyses |
| Large exports | Fetch large result sets and store them yourself | Up to 1,000 rows per call with mowteng, with paging |
| History | You can save data to your own database on a schedule | Live data only; mowteng stores none |
| Repeatability | Same code, same output, every run | The assistant's wording and summary can vary |
When the API is the better choice
- Scheduled pipelines. A daily job that loads data into a warehouse or dashboard should be code, not a conversation.
- Your own history. Search Console only keeps a limited window of data. If you want to keep more, export it yourself on a schedule. An MCP server that fetches live data cannot create history that was never saved.
- Large or unusual pulls. The API lets you ask for bigger result pages per request than mowteng's 1,000 rows per call.
- Exact repeatability. Reports that must be identical each run are better as code.
When an MCP server is the better choice
- Exploring. You do not yet know what to look for. Ask, read, follow up.
- Computed analyses.
insights_striking_distance,insights_cannibalizationandinsights_content_decayare already built. - Several sources. Search Console, Bing, Yandex and IndexNow sit behind one URL.
- No maintenance. There is no script to keep working when something changes.

Using both
They fit together. Keep a scheduled export for the history you care about, and use an assistant for the questions you did not plan.
